What Is A PC Gaming Graphics Card

What is a PC gaming graphics card? In a layman terminology, can be referred to as a device that is known to bring images to a computer’s monitor after having converted them from binary data to a viewable image.

Now, depending on what you want to do there are different kinds of graphics cards or video cards that are available in the open market.

And as expected, each of these cards is known to play distinct roles to which it is designed.

Output and SLI and other functions

A typical PC gaming graphics card can be explained in a much better way if you were to understand different technical terms associated with it. Given below are few such terms…

Accelerated Graphics Port:

AGP, as it is commonly known, is the basic format or the interface of the graphics card. This point-to-point and dedicated interface connects video card directly into the system’s processor and memory.

Application Programming Interface:

API represents a set of instructions that allows programmers of video games to work efficiently without having to create routine operation over and again.

OpenGL and Direct3D are few examples for API.

Anisotropic Filtering:

These are common filtering techniques employed in video games to help improve the quality of images shown on screen. Like others forms of filtering techniques, anisotropic filtering comes in different levels.

Higher the levels of anisotropic filtration lower will be the performance of the games and vice versa.

They represent the undesirable and unintentional element present in the image of a video game. They can include image ghosting, flickering effect, blurring and so on.

Aliasing or Anti-Aliasing:

Aliasing represents the tendency for a diagonal or a curved line to appear jagged as they are typically composed of many small squares.

Anti-Aliasing refers to remedies that are employed to overcome these tendencies through proper software settings.

Frame Rate:

Frame Rate refers to the speed at which still images are produced on the screen so as to create a full motion effect. It is usually measured in fps or frames per second.

Though humans are known to see 30 fps, many benchmark gamers believe that cards can be made to produce the far higher performance.

Digital Video Interface:

-It refers to the interface through which the transfer of digital video signals takes place between a computer and the display. This interface is chiefly responsible for better performance and image quality over an analog system.

In addition to the computers, DVIs are also used in televisions to display high-quality images from DVD, HDTV, and other sources.

It is a term used to indicate a collection of APIs that are fully developed and owned by Microsoft.

It is an API developed and owned by Microsoft used for creating 3D games.

Graphics Processing Unit:

The GPU as it is commonly known as refers to the processor that is present on the graphics card. It is the main chip that handles the bulk work required for creating images on display.

Should You Use Multiple Monitors For PC Gaming?

Multiple monitors

There is no doubt that bigger is better when it comes to computer monitors. The more you see, and the larger you see the images, the better your computer experience, whether you’re gaming or working.

If you’ve decided to increase your monitor capacity, congratulations; however, why you should use multiple monitors for PC gaming?

Let’s look at the question from a couple of different angles.

Viewing Space:

When it comes to the pure visual area, nothing beats nice big multiple monitors. You can find a number of different brands offering widescreen monitors in sizes up to 30 inches or so (larger with some setups).

The primary benefit to using multiple monitors is that you have no interruption of the visual field.

In other words, you can see the entire image with no breaks, whether you’re looking at your desktop or playing your favorite online game.

Multiple monitors work just as well, though they have an interruption between the monitors.

There is no distortion or image loss.

Many Samsung LCD Monitors have an incredible viewing angle, tons of connection options and great performance, especially the SyncMaster line, making this a great selection for a large LCD Monitor, specifically 23″ and above.

Better known for their LCD Displays and LCD TV’s, Sony LCD Monitors overall have stellar picture quality with high resolution and a plethora of features, but these beautiful monitors carry a hefty price tag.

Hands down, multiple monitors win out over their larger display. You can purchase two midrange monitors for much less than you’ll get a single large screen version.

If you’re economically minded (or just strapped for cash), this is the option for you.

If you’re concerned about the lack of continuity mentioned above, don’t be.

You’ll find that your vision adapts quite well to the separate monitors. After using your dual setup for a little while, you’ll wonder how you ever managed to do anything before.

HP LCD Monitors are great monitors in all size categories. They have an attractive design, outstanding performance and an approachable price tag.

Depending upon the series, HP has some very affordable monitors in the 17″-20″ range, perfect for setting up and saving money on a dual monitor setup.

Additional Hardware:

If you’re going to run multiple monitors, you’re going to have to upgrade the graphics card that came with your system.

And if your going to add monitors and new graphics cards, you may need to upgrade your motherboard as well.

For some reason, computer manufacturers haven’t made the logical leap that aftermarket graphic card makers have. Namely, that two monitors are better than one.

In other words, almost all computers come with only single monitor capabilities.

The good news is that almost all modern graphics cards worth their salt come with dual monitor hooks ups.

This includes both ATI and NVIDIA.

An additional option is to use a converter solution, such as Matrox. These are adapters that plug into your existing graphics card and can then split that signal to two monitor plug ins, much like the old splitters used to get cable to more than one television from a single line.

Both options have their advantages, though a new video card comes with additional onboard memory for better graphics capabilities.

Additionally, any Windows version above Windows 95 can handle multiple monitors.
